Lead the Audit Function for a Growing, Forward-Thinking Bank
This is a rare opportunity to step into a true enterprise leadership role with a well-established, family-owned financial institution that’s $5B+ in assets and actively planning for continued growth. The bank is seeking a seasoned audit leader who brings strong board presence, deep banking knowledge, and excellent leadership abilities.
You’ll operate as a strategic partner to the CEO and Board of Directors, helping to oversee and execute internal controls and compliance, while acting as liaison to outside governing bodies. While many institutions are retrenching, this bank is investing — in people, technology, and ideas — and is open to modernizing its audit approach.
What’s Expected of You
As Audit Executive, you’ll provide leadership and oversight for the internal audit function across commercial and retail banking operations, as well as key subsidiaries, including Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) and mortgage operations. This role requires someone who understands the business, can command a room at the Board level, and knows how to deliver tough messages with finesse.
Key responsibilities include
- Serve as a member of the Senior Leadership Team, contributing to strategic planning and enterprise decision-making.
- Provide strategic direction and leadership for the internal audit function, aligning audit activities with the bank’s objectives, risk appetite, and regulatory expectations.
- Develop and execute a comprehensive, risk-based audit plan covering operational, financial, IT, cybersecurity, and compliance areas.
- Maintain direct communication with the Audit Committee and Board of Directors, including preparation and presentation of audit findings, risk assessments, and recommendations.
- Continuously evaluate the bank’s risk landscape and adjust audit priorities to address emerging and high-risk areas.
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and professional standards (e.g., IIA, COSO).
- Leverage data analytics and audit technology to enhance efficiency, coverage, and insight.
- Foster strong, trust-based relationships across the organization, balancing independence with partnership.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of experienced auditors.
- Collaborate with internal and external auditors, as well as federal and state examiners.
- Participate in quarterly and monthly risk and audit discussions with executive leadership and subsidiary boards.
- Support the bank’s growth by understanding products, services, and operational strategy.
- Represent the bank through selective community and industry involvement, aligned with its brand and values.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).
- Master’s degree, banking school, or professional certifications (CIA, CPA, CISA) strongly preferred.
- Minimum 20 years of progressive experience in internal audit, internal controls, or risk leadership within banking or financial services.
- At least 10 years of experience partnering with senior leadership and Boards of Directors.
- Deep knowledge of banking regulations, compliance requirements, and audit standards.
- Proven experience across operational, financial, and IT audit disciplines.
- Strong executive presence with the confidence to hold firm when needed while maintaining productive relationships.
- Demonstrated ability to lead through complexity, navigate healthy tension, and influence outcomes.
- Strategic, forward-thinking mindset with a willingness to modernize tools and processes.
- Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate complex issues into clear, actionable insights.
