Senior Software Engineer (Platform)
Confidential Medical Robotics Company | Central Ohio | In-person
A fast moving medical robotics company is building a new software foundation for a commercial, safety-critical robotic product. The Senior Platform Software Engineer will be a highly hands-on contributor responsible for designing and delivering the reusable infrastructure used by the company’s robotics, controls, AI, firmware, and safety teams.
This is the middle of three platform-engineering levels and the company’s current priority hire. The position sits between an Engineer II focused primarily on implementation and a Staff Engineer responsible for overall architecture and technical direction.
The right candidate will bring more independence and design ownership than the Engineer II while remaining focused primarily on writing production code.
What you’ll do
- Design and implement foundational C++ frameworks, libraries, APIs, utilities, and platform services.
- Build software components that other engineering teams can integrate into their applications.
- Take ownership of significant platform capabilities from initial definition through testing, documentation, integration, and release.
- Help define new architectural patterns in a largely greenfield environment.
- Partner with the Staff Engineer and VP of Engineering on platform design and technical decisions.
- Work with robotics, controls, AI, firmware, quality, and regulatory stakeholders to understand downstream requirements.
- Design clean abstractions between the core platform and specialized robotics or AI functionality.
- Contribute to real-time behavior, hardware interfaces, fault handling, safety mechanisms, versioning, and upgrade strategy.
- Develop robust automated tests and raise the quality of the team’s development practices.
- Mentor less-experienced engineers through design discussions, code reviews, and hands-on collaboration.
- Help move a regulated robotic product from development toward commercial deployment.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Approximately 5–10 years of professional software engineering experience.
- Advanced, current C++ development and software-design skills.
- Experience building reusable frameworks, libraries, APIs, SDKs, or platform infrastructure.
- Demonstrated ownership of software used by multiple engineers or technical teams.
- Experience taking a complex product or platform from early development into production.
- Ability to make sound design decisions without relying on a fully established architecture.
- Strong automated-testing, code-review, and technical-documentation practices.
- Comfort working across organizational boundaries and reconciling competing technical needs.
- Willingness to work in person in Central Ohio.
Preferred qualifications
- Medical-device, automotive, aerospace, industrial robotics, or other safety-critical software experience.
- Experience working under IEC 62304, ISO 26262, DO-178C, FDA design controls, or a comparable lifecycle standard.
- Embedded or real-time software-development experience.
- QNX or another commercial RTOS.
- Embedded Linux, hardware interfaces, sensors, or actuators.
- Python and ROS2 experience.
- Experience supporting robotics, controls, computer-vision, or production AI teams.
- Startup or early-stage company experience.
- Informal technical leadership or mentoring experience.
Ideal candidate
This person is a senior individual contributor who can “grind out code” while also helping establish how the platform should be built. They have enough experience to make independent design decisions and guide other engineers, but they are not looking to leave hands-on development behind.
They should be energized by a fast moving development environment, evolving architecture, incomplete requirements, and the opportunity to establish new patterns from the ground up. You get to build something new and exciting!
