THE HEALTHCARE INITIATIVE
Where Talent Meets Opportunity
Director of Surgical Services & Diagnostic Imaging Services
Hawai‘i
A respected Hawai‘i health system is seeking a Director of Surgical Services & Diagnostic Imaging Services to lead a broad procedural and diagnostic services portfolio at a growing Magnet-designated campus.
This is not a traditional OR Director role. It is a broad campus leadership opportunity overseeing Surgical Services and Diagnostic Imaging during a period of growth, investment, and expanded access to care in the communities it serves.
This leader will play an important role in strengthening daily operations, supporting surgical and imaging growth, building consistency across teams, and partnering closely with surgeons, anesthesia, physicians, frontline leaders, and executive leadership.
The Opportunity
Reporting to the SVP & COO, the Director will provide leadership across two major service lines: Surgical Services and Diagnostic Imaging Services.
This role is well-suited for a leader who brings strong perioperative operations experience, comfort with broader ancillary or imaging services, and the business discipline to support growth, capital planning, construction, operational standardization, and team development.
Surgical Services
The Director will oversee perioperative and procedural operations, including Main OR, Endoscopy, Same Day Surgery, Pre/Post, Sterile Processing, and related procedural areas.
The surgical platform includes 4 advanced surgical suites and 2 procedural rooms, supported by managers and clinical operations leaders.
Key priorities include:
- Strengthening OR flow, scheduling discipline, and daily operational efficiency
- Supporting block utilization, surgical growth, and outpatient access
- Partnering effectively with surgeons, anesthesia, nursing, and hospital leadership
- Building accountability, communication, and consistency across teams
- Supporting managers and frontline leaders in a unionized environment
- Advancing perioperative services during a period of campus growth
Diagnostic Imaging Services
The Director will also provide strategic and operational oversight for a multi-site diagnostic imaging service line with more than 100 FTEs across hospital and outpatient settings.
The imaging program includes high-volume diagnostic services across MRI, CT, Ultrasound, Mammography, Nuclear Medicine, X-Ray, DEXA, Women’s Imaging, and related outpatient imaging areas.
Key priorities include:
- Providing multi-site leadership and operational standardization
- Supporting access, quality, safety, and regulatory readiness
- Developing managers and clinical operations leaders across a distributed workforce
- Partnering with physicians and departments to improve service delivery
- Supporting technology, equipment planning, and imaging service-line growth
- Continuing to strengthen Women’s Imaging and outpatient access
Why This Role
This is a strong fit for a leader who wants meaningful operational scope and the opportunity to influence both performance and culture.
The organization is looking for someone who understands that leadership is not only about metrics, throughput, schedules, and budgets. It is also about trust, communication, consistency, and the ability to bring teams and physicians together around a shared standard of care.
The right leader will be able to move comfortably between strategy and execution — from capital planning, construction, equipment needs, and supply standardization to team engagement, daily operations, and relationship-building with physicians and staff.
Why Hawai‘i
A move to Hawai‘i has to make sense personally and professionally.
For the right leader, this opportunity offers more than location. It offers the chance to serve a community with a strong sense of place, purpose, and connection — while helping expand access to surgical and diagnostic services in a growing region.
This is a place where relationships matter, care is personal, and leadership has a visible impact on patients, families, teams, and the broader community.
Ideal Background
The ideal candidate will bring:
- Strong perioperative leadership experience
- Experience leading through growth, change, and operational complexity
- Comfort overseeing imaging, ancillary, procedural, or multi-site clinical services
- Strong financial, budgetary, and capital planning knowledge
- Experience with construction, renovation, equipment planning, or service-line expansion
- Understanding of OR flow, block utilization, scheduling, call, anesthesia partnership, and perioperative operations
- Ability to build productive relationships with surgeons, anesthesia, physicians, managers, and frontline teams
- Experience developing leaders and building high-functioning teams
- Comfort using data to guide decisions, communicate performance, and improve operations
- Experience in a unionized environment preferred
Requirements
- BSN required
- Master’s degree preferred
- 5+ years of Surgical Services Director experience in a similar scope
- Prior leadership experience in Diagnostic Imaging, Ancillary Services, or broader procedural services preferred
- Strong understanding of perioperative operations, physician partnership, team leadership, and operational performance
- Ability to lead in a relationship-driven, growth-oriented, unionized environment

Salary range: $180k+
